SHETLAND ISLAND KNITTING

Patterns knitted the Shetland Islands are renowned the world over for their delicate lace, this is so fine it is said experienced hand spinners can produce sufficient yarn from two ounces of fleece to almost knit a 72 inch shawl.

The patterns are reputed to have been adapted to represent the beauty of the islands with such names as : Shell', 'Print of the Waves' and 'Fern'.

The subtle colouring comes from the local wool which is kept as natural as possible by being scoured and spun - but not dyed.
