FAIR ISLE

The island is noted for its highly coloured knitwear. When the American servicemen took Fair Isle garments home as presents during the first world war its fame spread  over the world..

It is thought the brightly patterned knitting came by incorporating symbols of their ancient religions.

Fair Isle grandmothers traditionally knit their grandsons first adolescent sweater. This would start with patterns with such names as ' Water of life,' continuing with the 'Seed of life', the 'Flower of Life', the 'Anchor of Hope', and the star patterns to guide him through life culminating on the shoulders with the 'Crown of Glory' as the final reward for a good life.
