ARAN
Aran knitting is noted for it's heavily-embossed and intricate patterns. Aran wool gives it this rugged look by being dyed locally, the muted colours come from the mosses and seaweed used to dye it. Today the demand for Aran knitted garments is universal.
These patterns have been known in the Aran islands for centuries, and are thought to be based on Austrian and central European techniques, but it is far more likely to be based on the Celtic crosses found on the mainland of Ireland.
